Video vs video: Jamia violence back in focus with clips showing what happened inside library

A video versus video war has erupted over the police violence inside the Jamia library on December 15. While the Jamia committee claimed the police had lathicharged the students inside the university library on December 15, the Delhi Police Crime Branch has said some “rioters” hit inside the library on the day.

It began with the Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC) tweeting a CCTV footage of alleged “police brutality” in old reading hall on December 15, 2019.

The 48-second video, which appears to be a CCTV footage, purportedly shows some seven to eight paramilitary and police personnel entering the Old Reading Hall and beating up students with batons.

The paramilitary and police personnel are also seen covering their faces with handkerchiefs in the video tweeted by JCC — a group comprising Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) students and alumni. The group was formed after the December 15 Jamia violence.

The university, on December 15, had turned into a battlefield as police entered the campus to look for ‘outsiders’ who were reportedly involved in incidents of violence and arson a few metres away from the educational institute during a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

Hours after the JCC tweeted the video of alleged police brutality inside the Jamia library on December 15, India Today TV accessed a video from Delhi Police Crime Branch which showed some “rioters” entering the library reading hall with stones in their hands to “escape the police crackdown”.

Delhi Police has claimed that the persons in the video are “rioters” who took refuge during the police crackdown on December 15.

The video shows some students studying in the Jamia library when some men start entering the library with stones in their hands. As soon as some 15-20 persons enter the library, some of them drag a table and close the gates.

The Crime Branch sources have told India Today TV that the police were trying to locate the rioters after some vehicles were torched outside the university during Jamia violence.

During the crackdown, sources said, the rioters had entered the library to take refuge and the police had then entered from the back gate to nab them.

The Delhi Police Crime Branch released another video allegedly of the December 15 Jamia violence which showed some persons carrying stones in their hands. The Delhi Police has claimed that the persons in the video are Jamia protesters.

The time shown in the second CCTV footage released by the Crime Branch is around the same as the video of alleged police brutality in Jamia library on December 15, 2019.

After a video, purportedly showing police personnel assaulting students at the Jamia Millia Islamia University library on the night of December 15 amid anti-citizenship law protests in the area, surfaced on social media, Delhi Police said it will investigate the matter.

“We have taken cognizance of the latest video (of December 15) of Jamia Millia Islamia University (library) which has surfaced now, we will investigate it,” Delhi Police Special Commissioner (Crime) Praveer Ranjan said while speaking to mediapersons in Delhi.
