SC notice to Lalu Prasad on CBI plea against bail in fodder scam case
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav on a plea filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) challenging the bail granted by the Jharkhand High Court in one of the fodder scam cases.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India SA Bobde and Justices BR Gavai and Surya Kant also sought response from Yadav.
The order, given on 12 July 2019, has been challenged on the grounds that it was passed “erroneously” by the high court, suspending the sentence awarded by the trial court and releasing the RJD chief on bail.
The Jharkhand High Court had granted bail to Yadav in the case of fraudulent withdrawal of ₹89.27 lakh from Deoghar treasury, citing that he had served half of his prison term of three-and-a-half years.
According to the petition filed by CBI, Yadav was the kingpin and main conspirator involved in the fodder scam. Yadav is alleged to have fraudulently misappropriated government money, while abusing his official position. It has been alleged that he withdraw excess money than the actual allotments from the District Treasury in Deoghar.
