HIGHLIGHTS

  • England (226 for 5) beat South Africa (222 for 6) by 5 wickets
  • England rode on fifties from Jonny Bairstow, Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler to overhaul the target with 5 balls to spare
  • England won the Test and T20I series vs South Africa on this tour while the ODIs ended in a 1-1 draw

England showcased their batting might in white-ball cricket once again as they crushed South Africa by 5 wickets in the series-deciding third T20I at Centurion on Sunday.

England rode on half-centuries from Jonny Bairstow, Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler to gun down the target of 223 with 5 balls to spare at the SuperSport Park Stadium. The result saw England clinch their second series win on the tour after bagging the four-match Test series 3-1 earlier last month. The 3-match ODI series was tied 1-1 with the 2nd game getting washed out in Durban.

Bairstow top-scored with 64 off 34 balls while Morgan and Buttler made 57 runs each with the English skipper remaining unbeaten off 22 balls.

Morgan’s knock was laced with 7 sixes and he equalled his own record of the fastest fifty by an Englishman in T20Is, achieving the feat yet again in 21 deliveries. He was named Player of the Match and Series.

Lungi Ngidi took a couple of wickets but conceded 55 runs from his 4 overs while Andile Phehlukwayo, Tabrez Shamsi and Dwaine Pretorius got a wicket each but all of them leaked runs at an economy of over 10 as English batsmen took them to the cleaners.

Earlier, the Proteas had posted a total which looked like a winning one after electing to bat first.

Heinrich Klaasen scored 66 while openers Temba Bavuma and captain de Kock made useful contributions of 49 and 35 respectively as South Africa reached 222 for 6 in 20 overs. Tom Curran and Ben Stokes grabbed a couple of wickets each for the visitors while Mark Wood and Adil Rashid got one each.

England as a result, notched up their 6th win of the tour out of the 10 games they played across formats against the Proteas, who were led by Faf du Plessis in the Tests while Quinton de Kock captained in the 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is but both skippers lost a series each.

Interestingly, England have had to fight back in all the three series on this tour after having lost the first games. They had lost the 1st Test in Centurion, the 1st ODI in Cape Town and the 1st T20I in East London.
