Spg: New rules issued for SPG, ADG will be in charge of PM’s security

The Special Protection Force (SPG), tasked with protecting the Prime Minister, will now be commanded by an Additional Director General (ADG) level officer of the Indian Police Service. Also junior officers will be appointed on deputation for an initial period of six years.

These standards were set by the Union Home Ministry on Thursday through a new set of rules issued through a gazette notification under the Special Protection Force Act, 1988 (34 of 1988). Accordingly, officers from All India Services will be appointed to the SPG on Central Government deputation on the same terms and conditions as are applicable to officers of the corresponding rank in the Central Government. It has been said that as before, the headquarters of the SPG will be in New Delhi. The Director shall be appointed by the Central Government at the level of an Additional Director General of Police of the Indian Police Service.

According to the notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the SPG will be headquartered in New Delhi as before and the Director will be appointed by the Central Government at the level of an Additional Director General of Police of the Indian Police Service. However, till now the SPG was headed by an officer of the rank of Inspector General and this post has been promoted as Additional Director General. Significantly, no rule or guideline was issued in this context. As per the new notification, other members of the SPG will be appointed on deputation for an initial period of six years.
