Nagaland political stalwart and its longest serving chief minister Neiphiu Rio is set to assume office as chief minister for a fifth consecutive term after a convincing win for his party and its ally, the BJP. Together, the two parties have secured 33 seats in the 60-member Nagaland assembly.

The BJP-IPFT alliance won 31 seats in the 60-member Tripura assembly, securing its return to power in the northeastern state for the second time in a row. According to the Election Commission website, the BJP bagged 30 seats while the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) got one. The saffron party is leading in two more seats.

Manik Saha is all set to return as Tripura’s chief minister for a second term as he defeated Congress’s veteran leader Ashish Kumar Saha, by a margin of 1,257 votes from Town Bardowali despite detractors within his own party predicting a tough time for him. From joining the saffron party in 2016 to being appointed chief minister last year in a brand renewal exercise, it has been a short but upward journey for the 69-year-old dental surgeon-turned-politician.

Counting of votes, polled in the February Assembly elections in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland, began on Thursday morning under three-tier security measures, including central paramilitary forces, officials said. Poll officials said that prohibitory orders have been promulgated in and around all counting centres as a precautionary measure. The Election Commission has appointed a General Observer for each Assembly constituency while several other officials, including micro-observers and counting supervisors, were appointed for the counting process. Officials said that metal detectors and CCTVs were installed in each counting hall and the entire counting process was being videographed.
