The Election Commission on Tuesday suspended a senior Tripura official for allegedly maligning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s face in a poster. Election officials said following a complaint by the ruling BJP, the district magistrate of South Tripura, following a directive from state Chief Electoral Officer Gitte Kirankumar Dinkarrao, investigated the matter and suspended Ajoy Das, superintendent of the fisheries department, because he Failed to respond appropriately to the tell letter.
The official said Das, who was earlier posted as a sector officer of Sabroom assembly constituency in southern Tripura, acted beyond the provision of the MCC. He said that based on the inquiry report and other circumstances, the District Magistrate of South Tripura district has been directed to suspend him and initiate process for disciplinary proceedings against Das as per the provision of the appropriate rule.
An official statement said Das went to a man’s shop and covered the prime minister’s face on the poster with black ink. After receiving a complaint from the BJP, the CEO investigated the matter and found that the sector officer had done this work illegally.
Earlier, a BJP delegation led by Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath met the CEO and demanded action against the officer for the incident.
