Political party of Koshyariand

Born in Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand, Koshyari did his MA in English from Almora College. He was interested in politics since his college life. He was active in the student union of Almora College during 1961-62.

A teacher and journalist by profession, Koshyari started social work with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. After this he entered politics from Bharatiya Janata Party.

When Nityanand Swami became the Chief Minister after the formation of Uttarakhand, Koshyari became a cabinet minister in the state government. After this, about six months before the Uttarakhand assembly elections, he was made the CM of Uttarakhand. He was the Chief Minister from 30 October to 1 March in 2002.

After the BJP’s defeat in Uttarakhand, Koshyari served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly from 2002 to 2007. After this, he also took over the responsibility of the state president of BJP from 2007 to 2009.

In 2007, BJP returned to the Uttarakhand government but he was not made the CM. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from Uttarakhand from 2008 to 2014. In 2014, the party fielded him in the Lok Sabha elections from Nainital and he was successful in winning.

Although the party did not give him a ticket in 2019. Being close to the Sangh, he was given the responsibility of the Governor of Maharashtra.
