Wasim Jaffer Gives Michael Vaughan a Gentle Reminder After The Former England Captain Teases Him

Michael Vaughan teased Wasim Jaffer after India suffered a seven-wicket defeat against South Africa in the third and final Test in Cape Town on Friday. And the quick-witted Jaffer, a former India opener, had a perfect response.

Minutes after India lost the series-decider, Vaughan posted on Twitter asking Jaffer if he was ok.

“Evening @WasimJaffer14!! Just checking you are ok,” wrote the former England captain.

Jaffer then gave him a reminder that India are still leading the five-match Test series that was curtailed to four matches last year against England.

“Haha all good Michael, don’t forget we are still leading you 2-1,” wrote Jaffer in response.

The fifth and final Test in Manchester last year was postponed due to covid issues. India were leading the five-match series 2-1 before it came to a screeching halt.

India, who were favourites to win the three-match Test series in South Africa, started the tour on a winning note. For the first time in their history, the tourists defeated South Africa in a Test played at Centurion’s SuperSport Park.

However, a wounded South Africa, beset with several on and off field issues, overcame the loss to launch a memorable comeback in Johannesburg. They successfully chased down a target of 240 to draw level at one-all. It was the first time that India lost a Test at the venue.

The result meant the final Test in Cape Town became the series-decider. India were bowled out for 223 after opting to bat first but they managed to secure a slender 13-run lead.

However, their batting suffered a collapse in the second dig and they were bowled out for a mere 198, setting the hosts a middling 212 to win. Powered by Keegan Petersen’s 82, South Africa chased down the target for the loss of three wickets to pocket the series 2-1.

Hernan Santana’s delightful free-kick failed to hand NorthEast United FC a win as they were held to a 1-1 draw by FC Goa in the Indian Super League at the Athletic Stadium in Bambolim on Friday.

Santana curled in a superb free-kick in just the second minute of the game but Airan Cabrera’s goal in the 39th minute helped Goa draw level. There were no goals in the second half, meaning Goa moved up a rung to eighth place having 13 points from 11 games while NorthEast United remained 10th with nine points from 11 games.

NorthEast United were off to a flying start courtesy of Santana’s individual brilliance. The 31-year old Spaniard curled in a delectable free-kick at the near post leaving Dheeraj Moirangthem with no chance as the ball pinged in off the crossbar.

It was a frantic start to the game and just the early push NorthEast United needed. Goa tried to settle down by playing more passes in midfield but NorthEast were not ready to rest on the slender lead as Deshorn Brown missed the target after beating two defenders.

Goa relied on the excellent Jorge Ortiz to deliver the goods and the Spaniard got past Provat Lakra to send a teasing ball inside the box but Mirshad Michu was alert to avert the danger at the right time. NorthEast looked in fine touch when Brown and Suhair Vadakkepeedika combined for the latter to see his effort deflect off a few Goa shirts for a corner.

Goa slowly started growing into the game and got the equaliser moments before the halftime whistle when Cabrera nodded in a Alberto Noguera corner with no one marking him.

In the second period, Goa looked the more threatening side with Ortiz and Cabrera combining brilliantly to keep NorthEast United defence on tenterhooks. There were chances few and far between for the Highlanders but Goa could not make the most of their attacking display as they had to share the spoils in the end with their rivals.

The batting has to be looked into, no running away from that, says Kohli after losing series to South Africa

Cape Town: Riding on a superb knock from Keegan Petersen, who was adjudged the Player of the Match and the series, South Africa beat India by seven wickets to win the match and the series 2-1, here on Friday.

Terming it to be a hard-fought series, India skipper Virat Kohli said that it was a great spectacle of Tests for everyone to watch. “Great first game but South Africa did amazingly well. In both the Tests that they won, they were clinical with the ball in crunch moments. Lapse of concentration cost us key moments and they seized those moments. Absolutely deserving winners in the end,” said Kohli, adding that one of the challenges they have faced touring abroad was to make sure capitalising on the momentum.

“When we’ve done that we’ve won Tests away from home. When we haven’t, they’ve cost us quite bad. Have had a few collapses that have cost us important moments and Test matches. It’s batting; can’t pin-point any other aspect. People talk about pace and bounce, considering their heights, they were able to get much more off the wickets in all three Tests. They applied pressure long enough for us to make mistakes. It’s the understanding of conditions for them which they know very well. The batting has to be looked into, no running away from that. Having collapses every now and then not a good thing,” said a disappointed Kohli

“We know how far we’ve come as a team. That people expect us to beat South Africa in South Africa is testimony to how far we’ve come. We haven’t done it, that’s the reality, accept it and come back as better cricketers. Got to credit the opposition where due,” added Kohli.

“I think the way KL batted as an opener was heartening, Mayank got stuck in on a couple of occasions, bowling was outstanding, few crucial knocks from the guys in the middle period, Rishabh’s knock in this Test was special, Centurion win was special too. Take the positives and move ahead, come back as better cricketers,” said the India captain.

Meanwhile, South Africa captain Dean Elgar said that he was pretty elated with the victory. “I think it will sink in a day or two, maybe this evening. Couldn’t be prouder of the group. The guys responded brilliantly. After the first loss, had a lot of hope knowing we can still win this. Asked the players to respond in a better nature, better way and they responded brilliantly. Extremely happy. Challenging your players within the group, need character to stand up. The way our bowling unit delivered throughout the series is brilliant. I threw down the challenge after the first game and the guys responded brilliantly.”

“Got a young, talented group. Every day in this environment, we’re gaining this experience. Unreal to see how a group that doesn’t have the repertoire or names can gel together as one. Extremely proud of this group. If you want to operate at a high performance level, have to have tough chats. If guys don’t like it, it’s up to them to deal with. I’ve got old-school mentality with new-school twist. Laid down challenges to senior players as well, great to see them take it on board and deliver.”
