Tim Paine sexting scandal: Ricky Ponting and Nathan Lyon make BIG statements of former captain | Cricket News

Tim Paine stood down from the role last Friday after media revelations he had been investigated and cleared over sexually explicit text messages sent to a female former colleague at Cricket Tasmania in 2017.

“I think it inevitably will (be a distraction). He’s made a huge call for himself, for Australian cricket and for the betterment of the Australian cricket team. But it’s not going to go away,” Ricky Ponting told a Cricket Australia website.

“As much as we would all love to see it go away and there comes a point where it’s never talked about, it’s inevitable that it’s going to be there. Unfortunately for Tim he’s going to get asked about it everywhere he goes … It will blow over and hopefully it passes in enough time to have some really good clear headspace going into Brisbane (for the first test).”

Australia spinner Nathan Lyon played down the impact Paine’s presence would have on the team. “I don’t see it as a distraction at all,” Lyon told reporters on Thursday. “At the end of the day we are professional athletes, we know what we’ve got to do and how we’ve got to go about it.”

The Ashes begins on December 8 at the Gabba. Ponting said Alex Carey could replace Paine as wicketkeeper if the 36-year-old is dropped but backed Josh Inglis, who has yet to make his international debut, to be the long-term successor behind the stumps.

“I’m on record saying I love Inglis. I think he’s going to be a really good cricketer for Australia for a long time in whatever format they pick him in first, whether its T20s, one-dayers or test cricket,” added Ponting.

Lyon, however, said he wanted Paine behind the stumps. “The selectors said that we were going to pick the best available 11 and in my eyes Tim Paine is the best keeper in the world,” he said. “This is very selfish from a bowler’s point of view. I want the best gloveman behind the stumps.”

Plenty of Rain But Little Practice For England Cricketers

The first of England’s Ashes warm-ups was abandoned after only 29 overs were possible in the three-day tour match between the two visiting sides. Persistent rain and storms restricted play on Tuesday and ensured no play was possible on Wednesday or Thursday between England and the England Lions at Peter Burge Oval in Brisbane’s bayside suburbs.

The England squad has another internal tour match scheduled from next Tuesday at Ian Healy Oval in Brisbane before the five-Test Ashes series starts Dec. 8 at the Gabba.

With more rain on the forecast for early next week, there’s the prospect that England’s star players Joe Root and Ben Stokes could start the first Test without any practice in match conditions.

Allrounder Stokes hasn’t played a Test match since March. His last game of any form of cricket was in July, with injuries and time away from the game for mental health reasons keeping him on the sidelines.

Stokes was in the first group of England cricketers who arrived in Brisbane on Nov. 6 to begin a 14-day quarantine at a luxury Gold Coast resort. The remainder of the squad, including Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler, arrived following England’s semifinal loss to New Zealand at the Twenty20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

The wet weather could also affect Australia’s preparations, with a three-day intra-squad match scheduled for Peter Burge Oval from next Wednesday set to determine the final make-up of the home side for the Gabba Test.

Australia holds the Ashes, having won at home in 2017-18 and retaining the urn when the 2019 series in England was drawn.

The Australians are coming off a victory in the Twenty20 World Cup but have had limited preparation for long-form cricket and are uncertain over who will lead the Test team. Captain Tim Paine quit last week after details were published of a text-message scandal from four years ago. His replacement is set to be announced later this week.

Ali-Lewis show propel Northern Warriors to their first win

Abu Dhabi: The Northern Warriors registered their first win of the Abu Dhabi T10 on Wednesday, riding majorly on a massive 106-run opening partnership between Moeen Ali and Kennar Lewis. Later in the evening, Oshane Thomas picked up a hat-trick to snuff out any hopes of a comeback from The Chennai Braves unit who eventually fell 19 runs short of the target. With Northern Warriors picking up two points from the contest, The Chennai Braves now remain the only side in the tournament without a win.

Chasing a massive total of 153, the Dasun Sanaka led team needed a start as good as their opponents. Opener Mohammad Shahzad swung his bat at everything, eventually getting out on the sixth ball he faced. Angelo Perera joined hands with Bhanuka Rajapaksa and the duo raised hopes of a fightback with some big hits as they took the score to 49. Abhimanyu Mithun, however, soon disturbed the stumps of Perera before Rajapaksa holed out in the next over to give Imran Tahir his solitary wicket of the evening. The innings lost momentum after the departure of the Sri Lankan batsmen and The Chennai Braves kept losing wickets at regular intervals. With the required run-rate mounting, Braves batsmen were forced to take risks and Oshane Thomas proved to be a beneficiary of this. Thomas removed Mark Deyal, Tion Webster, and Campher in his second over to finish with a hat-trick against his name. The chase folded up in 9.5 overs as The Chennai Braves finished with 133.

Northern Warriors who have struggled with their opening combination throughout the competition, finally sent Ali to open the batting with Lewis earlier in the evening. The right hand-left hand combination took a couple of overs to get going but sent The Chennai Braves on a leather hunt from third over onwards. Lewis started the attack by smashing Bopara for a couple of sixes and a four before Ali took the attack a notch higher in the next over as he punished Kevin Koththigoda with a hat-trick of sixes. There was no let-up in the intensity from either of the batsmen, resulting in the Warriors reaching the triple-figure mark in just 35 balls. The Ali-Lewis partnership saw nine fours and eight sixes being hit.

The Warriors’ innings faced a setback when Mark Deyal removed both the openers for an identical score of 49 in the seventh over. Normalcy resumed soon as the new pair of batsmen – Rowman Powell and Samit Patel – continued finding the boundary rope with similar frequency at the back end of the innings, stitching a partnership of 45 from just 18 deliveries. Curtis Campher managed to take two wickets off the final two deliveries of the innings but Northern Warriors had piled up 152 by then.

Brief scores: Northern Warriors 152/4 (Moeen Ali 49, Kennar Lewis 49, Mark Deyal 2-10) beat The Chennai Braves 133/10 ( Bhanuka Rajapaksa 34, Ravi Bopara 30, Oshane Thomas 3-21)
