In France, 3 lakh 30 thousand children became victims of sexual abuse in sacred institutions like churches from 1950 to 2020. This has come to the fore in a shocking study done on churches in France. According to the report, more than three thousand clergy, religious leaders and other workers working in Catholic churches in France have been involved in the exploitation of minors for the past seven decades. During this, the top officials of the church kept covering these activities secretly. It has been said in this report that 80 percent of the children who were sexually abused in the last seven decades were boys. Sauve said the consequences are dire. Nearly 60 per cent of men and women who have faced such sexual harassment in a holy institution like a church, have further faced major problems on an emotional level. The report said that of the 3.30 lakh children who were sexually abused in the last 70 years, more than 2 lakh 16 thousand children were harassed by church priests and other religious leaders. That is, in two-thirds of the total cases, church priests were found to be accused, while in 1 lakh 14 thousand cases other church workers came out as accused of sexual harassment. Releasing this report, Jean-Marc Sauve, chairman of the French Institute of Administrative Service (FIAS) and the commission set up to investigate church crimes, said that the church should take strong action against this culture of child sexual abuse and that these wrongs And silence should be condemned. The commission appealed to the French government to help the victims by giving them compensation. Especially in those cases where it is difficult to prosecute the accused through the court due to old age. Let us tell you that at this time the investigation of similar allegations against churches around the world is going on. In this connection, the French government had also set up an independent commission to investigate such allegations against French churches. After two and a half years of hard work, the commission made shocking revelations about these allegations in its 2500-page report. During this, the officers of the commission collected many documents from church to court, police and press. The commission had also launched a hotline during the investigation, which received over 6,500 calls from persons who allegedly became victims of persecution in the church or knew such people. The commission’s chairman says that the attitude of the church towards these allegations and the victims until 2000 was quite reprehensible. He said that sometimes church officials do not even condemn these sex crimes and leave them in contact with such predatory religious leaders. We believe that the Church is responsible for such victims.
