IPL 2021: MS Dhoni was close to getting BAN like Sanju Samson, here’s why | Cricket News

Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson is on thin ice and could possibly face a one-match ban in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for failing to maintain the required over rate.

The wicketkeeper-batter was slapped a fine of Rs 24 lakh after the IPL encounter between Rajasthan and Delhi Capitals as his side failed to finish the 20 overs in the required time limit, and earlier this week he was penalised Rs 12 lakh for the same offence.

If Rajasthan repeat the offence for the third time he will be fined Rs 30 lakh and would also be handed a one-match suspension as per the official rules laid by IPL.

The official rules on minimum over rate requirements states: “The third and each subsequent offence in a Season as Captain of the bowling Team, the Captain will be fined Rs. 30 lakh and banned from playing in the Team’s next League Match.”

In the first phase of IPL 2021, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni was treading on same line and was docked Rs 12 lakh for maintaing a woefully slow over-rate.

However, Dhoni being a smart custodian of the game made sure his side finished the 20-over quota in the required time limit in the following encounter, ensuring he doesn’t end up being peanlised twice for the same offence unlike Samson.

Decision to Cancel Pakistan Tour Was Out of Our Hands, Says New Zealand Coach Gary Stead

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead on Sunday said the decision to cancel the tour of Pakistan was “out of our hands” and backed his players to treat their upcoming T20 World Cup opener against the Asian nation like any other match despite the angry remarks by PCB chief Ramiz Raja. Recently, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) abandoned its men’s team’s tour of Pakistan just before the start of the first ODI citing a security threat, leaving the host nation disappointed as well as angry.

“That decision was out of our hands,” Stead was quoted as saying by stuff.co.nz. The players are currently in Dubai, one of the venues for the upcoming World Cup, which will be hosed in the UAE and Oman.

“… Guys are now in Dubai and getting ready, and there’s the IPL that they can have a good look at, which in many ways is good preparation for them as well,” Stead added. He said the five players who were meant to be playing in a five-match T20 series in Pakistan have begun training under batting coach Thilan Samaraweera in the UAE, where nine other squad members and travelling reserve Adam Milne are playing in the Indian Premier League.

“I think they’re okay. It was obviously unsettling and disappointing what happened in Pakistan and we certainly feel for the Pakistan cricket fraternity and fans,” Stead said. In the run-up to the World Cup, New Zealand have warmup matches lined up against Australia on October 18, and England two days later, before their opener against Pakistan in Sharjah on October 27.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja said the only way to overcome this disappointment is to become the world’s best by beating the other nations, including New Zealand in the T20 World Cup, two days after their opener against arch-rival India. Raja had warned that the Black Caps will “hear from us” in the ICC. “We had one team in our target, our neighbours (India), now add two more teams, New Zealand and England,” Raja had said, referring to England’s withdrawal from a tour next month soon after New Zealand’s departure.

Stead, however, backed his team to shut out the hype and noise around the recent pullout when it plays Pakistan in the mega-event. “Certainly, being that it’s Pakistan, people will hype that up, but for us it’s no different to any other match we play against them,” Stead said. At the last T20 World Cup in India in 2016, Kane Williamson’s side lost to England in the semifinals and this time have a tough group including Pakistan, India, Afghanistan and two other qualifiers.

Wild Tackles Sometimes Scare FC Goa Coach

FC Goa’s head coach Juan Ferrando has had a lot of worries at hand during the ongoing Durand Cup 2021 campaign. From losing Jorge Ortiz to injury early on in the competition to now another injury to standout performer Muhammed Nemil, Ferrando has had his work cut out. FC Goa are in the semi-finals of the tournament after their comprehensive 5-1 win over Delhi FC on Friday. Apart from the Goan outfit’s controlled football, the match stood out for the hard and irrational challenges that a frustrated Delhi FC threw at Goa’s players.

Barring the first 10 minutes or so, Delhi FC had no control over the game and once FC Goa went 2-0 up, frustration began to creep in the players of the Delhi outfit and they started throwing wild tackles – some of them were punished with a yellow card by the referee while some were let off.

In fact, at a point in the first half, Delhi FC players were, as a team, using shoulder blocks to stop FC Goa players from playing. In quick succession, three shoulder blocks from the front, and though all three of them were given as free kicks, the referee chose not to brandish a yellow for the fouls. Goa captain Edu Bedia even pointed out to the referee that three similar fouls have been made by Delhi FC.

Also, Delhi FC’s Suprodip Hazra was booked for a foul in the 44th minute, soon after which he hit Alberto Noguera in the face. Though the referee gave a free kick for the foul, another yellow card was not shown to Hazra, which would have meant Delhi going down to 10 men.

Ferrando admitted that wild tackles such as the ones in the quarter-finals scare him and it was important to protect the players from getting injured in these.

“Of course when we play in this tournament and also ISL, I am scared because you know, sometimes in football, there are these tackles and it’s necessary to protect the players. Also there is red card and yellow card rules and it’s necessary for the referees to take the right decision to protect the players,” Ferrando told News18.com.

During the match, Nemil also got injured as he seemed to have pulled his muscle. He was treated on the pitch for a bit before being substituted. Nemil is the joint top scorer of the tournament, having scored four goals. He has been one of the top performers for the Gaurs but a day after the match, Ferrando was unable to confirm the extent of his injury.

“Today, the doctors and the physios are checking his injury. We will see, we have 4-5 days more to prepare for the semi-final. In this moment, it is difficult to talk about the injury as we are taking day-by-day and will check till the last moment,” he said.
