The Supreme Court has asked the CBI, which is probing the murder of Dhanbad Additional Sessions Judge, to submit a report on the measures taken to protect the judges. The Supreme Court issued a notice to the CBI saying that there have been several incidents of intimidation and indecency with the judges, hence the court has asked all the states to file a status report on the measures taken for the security of the judges.

The Supreme Court has also raised questions on the modus operandi of investigative agencies. Chief Justice NV Ramana said that IB and CBI are not helping the judiciary at all, when judges complain, they do not think it proper to even reply. The apex court said that in the recent past a new trend of defaming the judiciary has started when favorable orders are not passed in favor of high-profile people.

The counsel appearing for Jharkhand told the apex court that the probe into the July 28 incident has been handed over to the CBI. The bench told Attorney General KK Venugopal that there were several cases involving gangsters and high-profile individuals and there were instances of judges receiving messages containing threats or abusive language.

“Judges are also not at liberty to lodge complaints,” the bench said. The bench said the police or the CBI does not help the judiciary if such complaints are registered. The bench said that we will hear the Jharkhand matter on Monday (August 9). We are issuing notice to CBI.

In the wake of the Dhanbad incident, the Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the issue of security of courts and judges. Dhanbad Court District and Sessions Judge-8 Uttam Anand was out on a morning walk on July 28 when an auto-rickshaw hit him at Randhir Verma Chowk near the district court in Sadar police station area, leading to his death.
