- Rakesh Asthana will be the new commissioner of Delhi Police
- Asthana is a 1984 batch IPS officer
- Asthana is considered close to Modi-Shah
Rakesh Asthana will be the new commissioner of Delhi Police. The Ministry of Home Affairs gave this information on Tuesday. Approving his appointment has been given by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. At present, Asthana is holding the post of Director General of BSF. He will replace the current police commissioner Balaji Srivastava. Asthana, a 1984 batch IPS officer of Gujarat cadre, has also been the special director of CBI.
Rakesh Asthana was born in Ranchi, the capital of undivided Bihar and now Jharkhand. Asthana is considered close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah because of his long-time work in Gujarat as an IPS officer. However, Asthana’s name has also been associated with controversies. A few years back, Asthana and the then CBI Director Alok Verma had come face-to-face over the allegations of corruption against him by a Hyderabad-based businessman, Satish Sana. Because of this, the CBI got a lot of disgrace.
A CBI DSP Devendra Kumar was also arrested in this case. However, Asthana later got a clean chit from the ED in this case. Asthana first came into the limelight while in the CBI because of the fodder scam involving former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav. He had filed a charge sheet against Lalu Prasad Yadav in the fodder scam case in 1996. He questioned Lalu Prasad Yadav for 6 hours in 1997 in this case.
Apart from this, Asthana has also investigated many high profile cases. In 1994, he also supervised the investigation related to the dropping of weapons in Purulia, West Bengal. He had investigated the 2002 Godhra incident, which was later upheld by the Supreme Court committee. Apart from this, whether it was the 2008 Ahmedabad bomb blasts or the investigation against Asaram Bapu and his son Narayan Sai, Asthana made a lot of headlines with his work.
