Their family is now left with a 16-year-old son, who was out of the house to buy medicine at the time of the accident.

Shaikh told, ‘When the accident happened, I had gone to get milk for morning tea. I didn’t know the building was in such a dilapidated condition. My family did not get time to leave when the building collapsed. When I returned, I saw several local people clearing debris from the spot before the arrival of the rescue team.

A local resident claimed that most of the houses in the area were built illegally. Later these were converted into three- or four-storey buildings without the approval of the civic body. He said that the owners of most of the houses live in other places and these houses were given on rent to the poor people.

The civic official said that the building collapsed at around 11:15 pm on Wednesday night in the collector’s premises located on Abdul Hameed Road in Malvani area. Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Vishwas Nangre Patil said the building was built illegally. It also had structural flaws. He said the building was also damaged due to cyclonic storm Toute last month.
