Concerned over the reports of corpses floating in the Ganges river during this phase of the Kovid-19 epidemic, a lawyer has filed a public interest litigation in the Supreme Court seeking a halt to the practice. At the same time, the petition has sought to ensure the disposal of dead bodies in a dignified manner by forming a three-tier panel at the center, state and local levels.
The petition, filed by Vineet Jindal through advocate Raj Kishore Chaudhary, also sought to direct the authority to remove the dead bodies and restore the ecology of all river banks. The petition said that floating bodies found in the Ganges river in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh affect the fundamental rights to health and life.
