Highlights:
- ICMR said – emphasis on rapid antigen test in second wave of corona
- There is not much difference in the age of the infected in both the waves
- The positivity rate in the country is close to 21 percent
People are making many kinds of mistakes regarding Corona. The government has cleared the situation regarding this. Dr. Balram Bhargava, DG, ICMR has said that once the test is positive, RT-PCR test should not be done again and again. If a person is completely healthy, he does not need the RTPCR test to go from one state to another. Also, the government has made another important announcement. She said that rapid antigen tests would be done in every hospital.
ICMR said work was also being done on home based testing solution amid complaints of lack of Kovid test. That is, a way to test at home whether someone has a corona or not. ICMR DG Dr Balaram Bhargava said that in the second wave of Corona, we have insisted on rapid antigen test so that the results can be known quickly.
Dr. Bhargava said that the RTPCR test capacity in the country is 16 lakhs per day and the rapid antigen test capacity is 17 lakhs per day. He said that 16 to 20 lakh tests were conducted in April and May this year. This includes both the RTPCR and the antigen test. On April 30, 1945299 tests were done, which is more than any country in the world. No country has done so many tests on a single day till date. Tests were carried out on 5 May 1923131.
There is so much positive rate in the country
ICMR Director General Bhargava said that the positivity rate in the country is around 21 per cent. There are 310 districts in the country. Among them, the positivity rate is higher than the country’s average positivity rate.
Dr. Bhargava said that in the second wave of Corona, we rationalized RTPCR. Antigen test was emphasized as well as early detection. Isolation and home care were also emphasized.
He said that if it is found out from the RTPCR test that someone is positive, then there is no need to do any more tests. Tests are not required to perform negative checks even for discharging from the hospital. The reason is that RTPCR captures the RNA particle and can show test positive even if there is no live virus in the body.
When RTPCR test not needed?
If someone is perfectly healthy, there is no need for an RTPCR test to go from one state to another. He said that in the first wave of corona, we had asked for 70 per cent RTPCR for 30 per cent antigen. However, now there is more emphasis on antigens.
Dr. Bhargava said that we analyzed the second wave of Corona. The data for the first and second wave have been collected since August. Those who have been admitted to the hospital are analyzing them.
They said that there is not much difference in the age of the infected in both the waves. Only those who are 40 or older have a higher chance of infection. He said that the youth are looking more infected because they suddenly start coming out and the new variant may also be the reason.
Dr. Bhargava said that the RTPCR test capacity in the country is 16 lakhs per day and the rapid antigen test capacity is 17 lakhs per day.
