UP Lok Sabha bypolls: Congress candidates lose deposits in both Gorakhpur and Phulpur seats
The Congress party today suffered humiliating defeat in the Lok Sabha bypolls in Gorakhpur and Phulpur with party candidates failing to save their security deposits.
In Phulpur, which was once represented by Jawaharlal Nehru in the Lok Sabha, Congress’ Manish Mishra bagged just 19,334 votes. According to Election Commission data, there were 19.61 lakh voters in the Phulpur parliamentary constituency where polling was held on Sunday.
The constituency had saw a turnout of only 37.39 per cent.
The Phulpur parliamentary constituency consists of the segments of Phulpur, Phaphamau, Soraon (SC), Allahabad North, and Allahabad West.
The EC announced that Samajwadi Party’s Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel defeated BJP’s Kaushlendra Singh Patel by 59,613 votes in Phulpur.
In Gorakhpur, Congress’ Surhita Chatterjee Karim managed to bag just 18,858 votes.

SP candidate Praveen Nishad today won the by-poll from here, defeating nearest rival and BJP candidate Upendra Shukla by a margin of 21,881 votes. The SP candidate was backed by BSP, NISHAD Party and Peace Party.
According to the returning officer, Praveen Nishad polled 4,56,513 votes, while BJP’s Upendra Shukla bagged 4,34,632 votes.
The win of two SP candidates in the two bypolls takes the SP’s tally in Lok Sabha to seven.
